What is a giclée print?
A giclée (pronounced: zhee-klay) is a high-quality art print created with a specialized inkjet printer that uses up to 12 ink channels. Due to its exceptional resolution, often 1440 dpi or higher, and the use of archival pigment inks on acid-free paper or canvas, a giclée print virtually invisibly approximates the original. Color nuances, depth, and brushwork are perfectly preserved. Museums and galleries worldwide use this technique for reproducing artworks.
The difference between giclée and a regular art print
Not every print is a giclée. Regular art prints, posters, offset prints, or cheap canvas prints are made with four basic colors (CMYK) and quickly lose quality at large sizes. A giclée print uses a multitude of ink colors, making the color depth and detail reproduction fundamentally different. Moreover, the inks are archival: colorfast for 75 to 100 years, without fading or yellowing. That makes giclée not only more beautiful but also a better investment.
Giclée prints at Modernekunst.nl
Our giclée collection consists of works by carefully selected artists. The iconic Dutch artist Herman Brood is represented with expressive, energetic works that perfectly convey his direct style. Peter Donkersloot brings recognizable icons from popular culture to your wall through his layered, hand-painted screen prints on linen, from Don Corleone to Brigitte Bardot and Cassius Clay. Jacqueline Schäfer completes the offering with figurative work that radiates warmth and atmosphere.
All giclée prints in our collection are available in large formats from 80 to 150 cm and are produced on museum-quality material. Some of the works are unique; others are available in a strictly limited numbered edition. Each work comes with a certificate of authenticity.
Giclée or fine art print: what's the difference?
In the art world, the terms giclée print and fine art print are often used interchangeably, and for good reason: both refer to the same high-quality digital printing process. Fine art print is the broader, more international term; giclée is the more specific technical term that accurately describes the technique. At Modernekunst.nl, we use the term giclée because it best reflects the quality standard we aim for.
