What is mixed media art?
Mixed media art is an art form where the artist combines multiple materials, techniques, or media in one work. Think of acrylic paint combined with photography, screen printing on linen supplemented with epoxy, or collage elements incorporated into a painted canvas. It is precisely this combination of materials that makes mixed media so visually rich and layered; each work has depth, texture, and a visual complexity that cannot be achieved with a single medium.
Mixed media is one of the most contemporary and liberal forms of visual art. Artists are not bound by a single style or technique, and this is reflected in the results: works that are both familiar and surprising, that reference popular culture but also speak their own artistic language.
Mixed media art at Modernekunst.nl
The mixed media collection is the largest on Modernekunst.nl. The absolute core of the collection is the work of Ronald Chapeau, whose works make him by far the most represented artist on the site. Chapeau combines photo elements, screen printing, and painting techniques on linen, canvas, paper, and Dibond to create large-format pop art works full of color and recognition. His iconic subjects range from Marilyn Monroe, Brigitte Bardot, and Michael Jackson to Jack Nicholson, Kate Moss, and Maradona. Each piece makes an immediate statement.
In addition to Chapeau, Guy Olivier, Seven Hansen, Jack Liemburg, Hans Jochem Bakker, Melkio, and Custom de Biest are represented with their own mixed media works.
The collection exclusively includes larger formats, from 80 cm to over 150 cm, and is available on various materials: linen, paper, canvas, Dibond, and acrylic. The style is predominantly pop art and modern. Of all the works, more than 50 are unique, and some are available as limited editions.
Mixed media vs. painting: what are you buying?
A mixed media work is not a traditional painting nor a reproduction; it is an artwork that deliberately pushes the boundaries between techniques. Where an acrylic or oil painting relies purely on one medium, a mixed media artist draws strength from combination. This makes every work inimitable: the same hands, the same materials, but never the exact same result. Mixed media works are therefore pre-eminently collector's art; both unique originals and limited editions have an unmistakably distinct character.
