What is a screen print?
A screen print, also known as silkscreen or serigraph, is a graphic printing technique where ink is applied layer by layer through a fine-mesh screen onto the printing material. Each color requires a separate screen and a separate print run, giving a screen print a handcrafted, artisanal character that fundamentally differs from a digital print or photo reproduction. The technique was popularized by artists like Andy Warhol and remains a valued form of original graphic art to this day.
Screen print versus giclée: what's the difference?
Both are high-quality art prints, but their production methods differ significantly. A screen print is physically printed with ink on canvas or paper, layer by layer, by hand. A giclée is a digital inkjet print on museum-quality material. Due to their artisanal nature, screen prints often have a richer texture and a more intense color effect, especially in larger formats. Both are available in limited, numbered editions and come with a certificate of authenticity.

Why buy a screen print?
A screen print is one of the most accessible ways to bring original art into your home. Unlike unique paintings, screen prints are available in a limited edition, making them more affordable without compromising artistic value or authenticity. Thanks to the artisanal printing technique, screen prints are also visually impressive: the colors are full and saturated, the lines sharp, and the texture palpably present. A screen print on the wall is not just a statement; it's an investment in original art with a proven name.
All screen prints at Modernekunst.nl come with a certificate of authenticity and are professionally packaged from our gallery in Leiden.
