About this artwork
'Hidden' street shot in Berlin by Gert Willem Haasnoot
In Berlin, advertising posters are plastered over one another until they form a thick layer, sometimes as much as 20 to 30 centimeters deep. Then a municipal worker comes along with a crowbar and tries to forcibly tear the entire layer of paper off. This sometimes leads to unique compositions, such as this face that emerged from under layers of other posters.
The other posters are also partially visible, torn by the crowbar. The man's face, now only partially visible, will eventually disappear again after a visit from the next bill-poster. Images that emerge and fade at the pace of a global city.
The photo is printed on an aluminum dibond sheet; the flat artwork has a frame on the back, which makes it hang 'floating' on the wall.
An ode to street art by photographer Gert Willem Haasnoot
Graffiti, once considered vandalism, is increasingly accepted as a full-fledged art form. For ten years, photographer Gert Willem Haasnoot has been photographing graffiti on the streets of Berlin, Valencia, Barcelona, and recently also in Amsterdam.
