About this artwork
Legendary actor and race car driver Steve McQueen, clad in his characteristic white Heuer racing suit with the iconic red and blue stripes and the Gulf logo. Inspired by the photo taken on the set of the motorsport film Le Mans (1971).
In the artwork, McQueen is making a V-sign with his index and middle fingers. Although this gesture is seen as a sign of peace or victory, McQueen specifically used it at the time as a rebellious salute to his rivals on the track. It fit perfectly with his image as the ultimate 'King of Cool'.
Chapeau works with a distinctive mix of screen printing, collage, and thick layers of acrylic paint, often enriched with vintage newspapers. The result is layered, tactile work that never feels entirely flat.
The monotypes are produced by the artist in a very limited edition and are stretched on a thick stretcher frame, with the sides painted as well.
